قصة حاج غريبة و عجيبة

جلس الحاج سعيد في صالة الانتظار بمطار جدة الدولي ، بعد أداء مناسك الحج ، وبجانبه حاج آخر . 

. قال الرجل : أنا أعمل مقاولا ، وقد أنعم الله علي بالحج هذا العام للمرة العاشرة .

أومأ سعيد برأسه وقال :
– حجا مبرورا ، وسعيا مشكورا ، وذنبا مغفورا .
ابتسم الرجل ، وقال : أجمعين ..

وأنت هل حججت قبل ذلك ؟
أجاب سعيد بعد تردد :
– والله يا أخي لحجتي هذه قصة طويلة ولا أريد أن أوجع رأسك بها.

ضحك الرجل ، وقال :
– بالله عليك أخبرني ، فكما ترى نحن لانفعل شيئا سوى الانتظار .
ابتسم سعيد وقال :

– نعم, الانتظار وهو ما تبدأ به قصتي ،

 فقدانتظرت سنين طويلة حتى حججت ، فبعد ثلاثين عاما من العمل معالج فيزيائي في مستشفى خاص استطعت أن أجمع كلفة الحج ، وفي نفس اليوم الذي ذهبت لأخذ حسابي من المستشفى صادفت إحدى الأمهات التي

 أعالج ابنها المشلول وقد كسا وجهها الهم والغم وقالت لي : أستودعك الله يا أخ سعيد فهذه آخر زيارة لنا لهذاالمستشفى ,

استغربت كلامها وحسبت أنها غير راضية عن علاجي لابنها وتفكر في نقله لمكان آخر فقالت لي : لا يا أخ سعيد ، يشهد الله إنك كنت لابني أحن من الأب وقد ساعده علاجك كثيرا بعد أن كنا قد فقدنا الأمل به .

ومشت حزينة!!!
استغرب الرجل وقاطع سعيد قائلا :
– غريبة , طيب إذاكانت راضية عن أدائك ، وابنها يتحسن فلم تركت العلاج ؟
أجابه سعيد :
– هذا ما فكرت به وشغل بالي فذهبت إلى الإدارة وسألت
فتبين أن والد الصبي فقد وظيفته ولم يعد يتحمل نفقة العلاج
حزن الرجل وقال :

- لاحول ولا قوة إلا بالله , مسكينة هذه المرأة .
وكيف تصرفت ؟

أجاب سعيد :
– ذهبت إلى المدير ورجوته أن يستمر بعلاج الصبي على نفقة المستشفى ولكنه رفض رفضا قاطعا وقال لي : هذه مؤسسة خاصة وليست جمعية خيرية .

خرجت من عند المدير حزينا مكسور الخاطر على المرأة ,
وفجأة وضعت يدي على جيبي الذي فيه نقود الحج
فتسمرت في مكاني لحظة ثم رفعت رأسي إلى السماء وخاطبت ربي قائلا :

اللهم أنت تعلم بمكنون نفسي وتعلم أنه لاشيء أحب إلى قلبي من حج بيتك ،وزيارة مسجد نبيك ، وقد سعيت لذلك طوال عمري ولكني آثرت هذه المسكينة وابنها على نفسي فلاتحرمني فضلك ،
وذهبت إلى المحاسب ودفعت كل مامعي له عن أجرة علاج الصبي لستة أشهر مقدما ، وتوسلت إليه أن يقول للمراة بأن المستشفى لديها ميزانية خاصة للحالات المشابهة .
تأثر الرجل و دمعت عيناه وقال :
– بارك الله فيك ،وفي أمثالك,
ثم قال : إذا كنت قد تبرعت بمالك كله فكيف حججت إذن ؟فاجاب : رجعت يومها إلى بيتي حزينا على ضياع فرصة عمري في الحج ، ولكن الفرح ملأ قلبي لأني فرجت كربة المرأة وابنها ، فنمت ليلتها ودمعتي على خدي فرأيت في المنام أنني أطوف حول الكعبة، والناس يسلمون علي ويقولون لي : حجا مبرورا ياحاج سعيد فقد حججت في
السماء قبل أن تحج على الأرض , دعواتك لنا ياحاج سعيد ,
فاستيقظت من النوم وأنا أشعر بسعادة غيرطبيعية ،
فحمدت الله على كل شيء ورضيت بأمره .
وما إن نهضت من النوم حتى رن الهاتف ،وإذا به مدير المستشفى الذي قال لي : أنجدني فصاحب المستشفى يريد الذهاب إلى الحج هذا العام وهو لايذهب دون معالجه الخاص ،
لكن زوجة معالجه في أيام حملها الأخيرة ولا يستطيع تركها، فهلا أسديتني خدمة .. ورافقته في حجه .. فسجدت لله شكرا .. وكما ترى
فقد رزقني الله حج بيته دون أدفع شيئا ، والحمد لله وفوق ذلك فقد أصر الرجل على إعطائي مكافأة مجزية
لرضاه عن خدمتي له ، وحكيت له عن قصة المرأة المسكينة فأمر بأن يعالج ابنها في المستشفى على نفقته الخاصة
وأن يكون في المستشفى صندوق خاص لعلاج الفقراء ، وفوق ذلك فقد عين زوجها بوظيفة في إحدى شركاته . ورجع إلي مالي الذي دفعته .. أرأيت فضلا أعظم من فضل ربي ؟!

نهض الرجل وقبل سعيد على جبينه قائلا :
– والله لم أشعر في حياتي بالخجل مثلما أشعر الآن فقد كنت أحج المرة تلو الأخرى وأحسب نفسي قد أنجزت شيئا عظيما ، وأن مكانتي عند الله ترتفع بعد كل حجة ولكني ادركت الآن أن حجك بألف حجة من أمثالي ؛ فقد
ذهبت أنا إلى بيت الله ، أما أنت فقد دعاك الله إلى بيته ،
ومضى وهو يردد تقبل الله منا ومنكم صالح الأعمال

اللهم ارزق كل من نشر هذه القصة عملا صالحاً والذرية الصالحة و حج بيت الله الحرام
ويسر له كل أموره

((رفيقة العمر))

ذهب أبو العاص إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قبل البعثة وقال له:
أريد أن أتزوج زينب ابنتك الكبرى.
( أدب ).

فقال له النبي:
لا أفعل حتى أستأذنها.
( شرع ).

ويدخل النبي ﷺ على زينب:
ابن خالتك جاءني وذكر اسمك..
فهل ترضينه زوجا لك؟

فاحمرّ وجهها وابتسمت.
( حياء ).

فخرج النبي وتزوجت زينب أبا العاص بن الربيع لكي تبدأ قصة حب قوية..
وأنجبت منه علي وأمامة.

ثم بدأت مشكلة كبيرة ( عقيدة ) حيث بعث النبي نبيا..
وكان أبو العاص مسافرا وحين عاد وجد زوجته أسلمت.

فقالت له:
عندي لك خبر عظيم.
فقام وتركها.
( احترام ).

فاندهشت زينب وتبعته وهي تقول:
لقد بُعث أبي نبيا وأنا أسلمت.
فقال: هلا أخبرتيني أولا؟

قالت له:
ما كنت لأُكذِّب أبي..
وما كان أبي كذابا إنّه الصادق الأمين..

ولست وحدي لقد أسلمت أمي وأسلم إخوتي..
وأسلم ابن عمي (علي بن أبي طالب)..
وأسلم ابن عمتك (عثمان بن عفان)..
وأسلم صديقك (أبو بكر الصديق)..

فقال:
أما أنا لا أحب الناس أن يقولوا خذّل قومه وكفر بآبائه إرضاء لزوجته..
وما أباك بمتهم..
فهلا عذرتِ وقدّرتِ؟
( حوار بناء )..

فقالت:
ومن يعذر إنْ لم أعذر أنا؟
ولكن أنا زوجتك أعينك على الحق حتى تقدر عليه..
( فهم واحتواء ).

ووفت بكلمتها له 20 سنة..
( صبر  لله ).

ظل أبو العاص على كفره ثم جاءت الهجرة، فذهبت زينب إلى النبي ﷺ
وقالت:
يا رسول الله أتأذن لي أنْ أبقى مع زوجي؟
( حب ).

فأذن لها ﷺ..
( رحمة ).
 ‏
وظلت بمكة إلى أنْ حدثت غزوة بدر، وقرّر أبو العاص أن يخرج للحرب في صفوف جيش قريش..

زوجها يحارب أباها..
فكانت زينب تبكي وتقول:
اللهم إنّي أخشى من يوم تشرق شمسه فييتم ولدي أو أفقد أبي..
( حيرة ورجاء ).

ويخرج أبو العاص بن الربيع ويشارك في غزوة بدر..
وتنتهي المعركة فيُؤْسَر أبو العاص، وتذهب أخباره لمكة..
فتسأل زينب:
وماذا فعل أبي؟
فيقال لها:
انتصر المسلمون.
فتسجد شكرا لله..

ثم تسأل:
وماذا فعل زوجي؟
فقالوا:
أسره حموه.
فقالت:
أُرسل في فداء زوجي..
( عقل وتأني ).

ولم يكن لديها شيئا ثمينا تفتدي به زوجها..
فخلعت عقد أمها الذي كانت تُزيِّن به صدرها..
وأرسلت العقد مع شقيق أبي العاص بن الربيع إلى رسول الله ﷺ.
 ‏
وكان النبي جالسا يتلقى الفدية ويطلق الأسرى..
وحين رأى عقد السيدة خديجة سأل:
هذا فداء من؟
قالوا:
هذا فداء أبو العاص بن الربيع.
فبكى النبي وقال:
هذا عقد خديجة..
( وفاء ).

ثم نهض وقال:
أيها الناس..
إنّ هذا الرجل ما ذممناه صهرا فهلا فككت أسره؟
( عدل ).

وهلا قبلتم أنْ تردوا إليها عقدها؟
( تواضع القائد ).

فقالوا:
نعم يا رسول الله..
( أدب الجنود ).

فأعطاه النبي العقد، ثم قال له:
قل لزينب لا تفرطي في عقد خديجة.
( ثقة في أخلاقه مع أنه كافر ).

ثم قال له:
يا أبا العاص هل لك أن أساررك؟
ثم تنحى به جانبا وقال له:
يا أبا العاص إنّ الله أمرني أنْ أُفرِّقَ بين مسلمة وكافر، فهلا رددت إليّ ابنتي؟

فقال:
نعم..
( رجولة ).

وخرجت زينب تستقبل أبا العاص على أبواب مكة، فقال لها حين رآها:
إنّي راحل.
فقالت:
إلى أين؟

قال:
لست أنا الذي سيرتحل، ولكن أنت سترحلين إلى أبيك..
( وفاء بالوعد )

 فقالت:
لم؟

قال:
للتفريق بيني وبينك..
فارجعي إلى أبيك..

فقالت:
فهل لك أن ترافقني وتُسْلِم؟

فقال: لا.

فأخذت ولدها وابنتها وذهبت إلى المدينة..
( طاعة ).

وبدأ الخُطّاب يتقدمون لخطبتها على مدى 6 سنوات، وكانت ترفض على أمل أنْ يعود إليها زوجها..
( وفاء ).

وبعد 6 سنوات كان أبو العاص قد خرج بقافلة من مكة إلى الشام،
وأثناء سيره يلتقي مجموعة من الصحابة ويفقد قافلته.

فسأل على بيت زينب وطرق بابها قبيل آذان الفجر..
( ثقة ).

فسألته حين رأته:
أجئت مسلما؟
( رجاء ).

قال:
بل جئت هاربا..

فقالت:
فهل لك إلى أنْ تُسلم؟
( إلحاح وتعهد ).

فقال: لا.

قالت:
فلا تخف.. مرحباً بابن الخالة..
مرحباً بأبي علي وأمامة..
( فصل وعدل ).

وبعد أن أمّ النبي المسلمين في صلاة الفجر، إذا بصوت يأتي من آخر المسجد:
قد أجرت أبو العاص بن الربيع..
( إيجابية ).

فقال النبي:
هل سمعتم ما سمعت؟

قالوا:
نعم يا رسول الله..

قالت زينب:
يا رسول الله إنّ أبا العاص إن بعُد فهو ابن الخالة..
وإنْ قرب فهو أبو الولد..
وقد أجرته يا رسول الله..

فوقف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وقال:
يا أيها الناس إنّ هذا الرجل ما ذممته صهرا..
وإنّ هذا الرجل حدثني فصدقني..
ووعدني فوفّى لي..

فإن قبلتم أن تردوا إليه ماله وأن تتركوه يعود إلى بلده، فهذا أحب إلي..
وإنُ أبيتم فالأمر إليكم والحق لكم ولا ألومكم عليه..
( شورى ).

فقال الناس:
بل نعطه ماله يا رسول الله..
( أدب الجنود ).

فقال النبي:
قد أجرنا من أجرتِ يا زينب..
ثم ذهب إليها عند بيتها وقال لها:
يا زينب أكرمي مثواه فإنّه ابن خالتك وإنّه أبو العيال، ولكن لا يقربنك، فإنّه لا يحل لك..
( رحمة وشريعة ).

فقالت:
نعم يا رسول الله..
( طاعة ).

فدخلت وقالت لأبي العاص بن الربيع:
يا أبا العاص أهان عليك فراقنا؟
هل لك إلى أنْ تُسْلم وتبقى معنا؟
( حب ورجاء ).

قال:
لا..
وأخذ ماله وعاد إلى مكة..

وعند وصوله إلى مكة وقف وقال:
أيها الناس هذه أموالكم هل بقى لكم شيء؟
( أمانة ).

فقالوا:
جزيت خيرا.. وفيت أحسن الوفاء..
( فطرة ).

قال:
فإنّي أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمدًا رسول الله..
( نعمة ).

ثم دخل المدينة فجرا وتوجه إلى النبي وقال:
يا رسول الله أجرتني بالأمس واليوم جئت أقول أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأنك رسول الله..
( دفع بالتى هى أحسن ).

ثم قال أبو العاص بن الربيع:
يا رسول الله هل تأذن لي أنْ أراجع زينب؟
( عشرة وحب ).

فأخذه النبي وقال:
تعال معي..
ووقف على بيت زينب وطرق الباب وقال:
يا زينب إنّ ابن خالتك جاء لي اليوم يستأذنني أنْ يراجعك فهل تقبلين؟
( أب راع ).

فأحمرّ وجهها وابتسمت.
( رضى دائم ).

بعد سنة من هذه الواقعة ماتت زينب..
فبكاها العاص بكاء شديدا حتى رأى الناس رسول الله يمسح عليه ويهون عليه..
فيقول له العاص:
والله يا رسول الله ما عدت أطيق الدنيا بغير زينب..
( رفيقة العمر ).

ومات بعد سنة من موت زينب.
( أرواح مجندة ).

سعد الزوج بالخبر وذهب إلى زوجته وأخبرها 
إن ضيفا عندنا اليوم هو رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم.
سعدت الزوجة بالخبر وطبخت كل ما لذ وطاب
 وهي راضية ومن طيب خاطرها .
وعندما ذهب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم إليهم ونال كرمهم وطيبة ورضى الزوجة
 قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم
للزوج عندما أخرج من بيتك دع زوجتك تنظر إلى الباب الذي أخرج منه .
فنظرت الزوجة إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم وهو يخرج من بيتها والدواب والعقارب وكل ضرر يخرج وراء رسول الله .
فصعقت الزوجة من شدة الموقف وتعجبت مما رآت
فقال لها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم هكذا دائما عندما يخرج الضيوف من بيتكِ 
يخرج كل البلاء والضرر والدواب من منزلكِ
فهنا الحكمة من إكرام الضيف وعدم الضجر.
البيت الذي يكثر فيه الضيوف .. بيت يحبه الله. . .
 ما أجمل البيت المفتوح للصغير والكبير. 
بيت تتنزل فيه رحمات وبركات السماء ..
قال رسول الله صل الله عليه وآله وسلم: " 
إذا أراد الله بقوم خيراً أهدى لهم هدية. قالوا: وما تلك الهدية؟

What to see in the night sky in July

See a close encounter with Mars or the century's longest lunar eclipse.

The month celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere for BBQs, maturing gardens and crops, and moments spent relaxing in the hammock or kicking back on the beach is upon us. While fireworks will dominate the evening skies on the Fourth of July across the U.S., the rest of the month will feature visual spectacles of a different kind –– from the full Thunder 'Blood' Moon to a dazzling close encounter with Mars.

So set your alarm clock, have a blanket ready and check out some of July's celestial highlights below. Wishing you clear skies!

Venus rules the morning sky (All month)

Venus, the queen of planets, will rule the early morning hours of July –– with a visual brightness approaching minus 4 magnitude. The closest planet to Earth, Venus glows brightly due to both its proximity and the fact that its atmosphere is composed of thick clouds of carbon dioxide that reflect sunlight back into space. Look for it on the eastern horizon two or three hours before dawn. For some extra splendor, wake up early on the morning of July 14 to watch the waning crescent moon briefly glide by Venus.

Spy the solar system's brightest asteroid with a 13-mile-high mountain (until July 16)

From now until July 16, the 326-mile-wide asteroid Vesta will be bright enough to pick out with a pair of high-powered binoculars or, even better, a backyard telescope. Our solar system's lone remaining protoplanet — an embryonic remnant of the material that created future worlds like Earth — Vesta also hosts a 65,000 foot-tall mountain, second in size only to Mars's Olympus Mons (72,000 feet).

Those interested in spotting this yellow-hued relic should use Saturn as their guide and then star-hop into the constellation Sagittarius. While it will shine brightest through mid-July, more powerful telescopes should be able to pick it out until late September. But catch it while you can; Vesta won't be this close to Earth again until 2040.

Pluto makes its closest approach to Earth (July 12)

Pluto, the most beloved dwarf planet, will make its closest approach to Earth on the evening of July 12. Unlike Mars, which will come within 36 million miles of us later in the month, Pluto's opposition (when the Earth is lined up between an object and the sun) will only push it to within 2.66 billion miles. At this distance, it will "shine" at a diminutive 14.1 magnitude, so you'll need a telescope with at least an 8-10 inch diameter mirror to pick it out. Thankfully, dark skies courtesy of a new moon will help. Look for it within the southern constellation Sagittarius after midnight.

It's worth noting that Pluto's alignment with Earth hasn't been this perfect since 1931 and won't be again for another 161 years. So if you don't see it, be sure to look up anyways on the 12th and appreciate this extremely rare event.

New moon (July 13)

This month's new moon offers the perfect opportunity to grab the telescope and head out for dark, unencumbered views of galaxies, planets and other celestial sights.

Take in the Delta Aquarids meteor shower (July 27-28)

A precursor to the more popular Perseid meteor shower in early August, the Delta Aquarids peak around July 27 and 28 and offer as many as 10-20 shooting stars per hour. According to EarthSky.org, 5 to 10 percent of the Aquarids leave behind glowing ionized gas trails that last a few seconds after the meteor has passed.

The meteors appear to originate just before the constellation Aquarius the Water Bearer in the southern sky. In reality, they're debris from Comet 96P Machholz, a short-period sun-grazing comet that swings our way every five years. To catch the shower at its best, look up on the morning of the 27 or 28 between 2-3 a.m. Unfortunately, you'll have to contend with a glowing full moon, so it's likely that you'll see only the brightest of the Aquarids.

Western Hemisphere takes in a full Thunder Moon (July 27)

With July being the stormiest month of the year for the Northern Hemisphere, it only makes sense that its full moon nickname would follow suit. For those lucky enough to have clear skies, the so-called Thunder Moon (frankly, the best moon nickname of the year) will make its trip across the evening sky on the morning of July 27.

In addition to its association with storms, this full moon has also been nicknamed the Buck Moon (for when deer begin growing their antlers), the Ripe Corn Moon and the Hay Moon. Europeans also called it the Meade Moon as it coincided with an uptick in honey harvest for making the delicious drink.

Eastern Hemisphere welcomes the Blood Moon (July 27)

Those living in Europe, Africa, Australia or anywhere else in the Eastern Hemisphere on July 27 will be treated to the 21st century's longest lunar eclipse. Nicknamed a Blood Moon due to the ruddy light cast by Earth's shadow, the totality (moment of complete eclipse) will last an astounding 1 hour and 43 minutes. So you'll have plenty of time to look up and marvel at our closest neighbor turned an ominous shade of red.

Those living in the Western Hemisphere can look forward to their own total lunar eclipse to unfold on Jan. 21, 2019.

The return of the 'ghost of the summer dawn' (July 30)

Orion the Hunter is a distinctive constellation during the winter months thanks to the three bright stars, Mintaka, Alnitak and Alnilam, that make up its belt. On July 30, this constellation will make its eastern return in the early morning hours, an event beautifully nicknamed "the ghost of the shimmering summer dawn." You can almost hear him whispering across the creeping light of a new day that "winter is coming..."

Mars will steal the celestial spotlight for most of July, peaking in both dazzle and size on the morning of July 31 with a magnitude brightness of around -2.78. On a few days before, on July 27, Mars's orbit will place it in a straight line with the Earth and sun, an annual event known as opposition. Because the orbit of Mars is elliptical, however, some oppositions are much closer than others. In fact, on July 31, the red planet will come within 35.8 million miles of Earth –– the closest brush with our blue marble since the historical opposition of 2003!

"Mars will easily be visible to the naked eye. In fact, you will be hard pressed to miss it," Dean Regas, astronomer for the Cincinnati Observatory, told MNN. "It will look like a glowing orange beacon of light rising in the southeast after sunset. It'll be much brighter than any star, brighter than Jupiter, nearly as bright as Venus. And you'll see it every night for the next several months."

To spot this Mars, look towards the southeast sky just after sunset. At this distance, backyard telescope can sometimes pick up the planet's polar ice caps, distinctive hues of orange, yellow, and red and even clouds.

Are brown eggs healthier than white eggs?

I grew up eating eggs from white shells; I didn't know they could be any other color.

Our eggs came from the grocery store in Styrofoam packaging, and the eggs in the refrigerators at all my friends' houses were exactly the same. Growing up in suburbia in the 1970s and '80s meant no farmers markets, no trips to farms and no concept of food variety.

When I began buying my eggs at the farmers market, things changed. The eggs were brown and usually in paperboard cartons or Styrofoam cartons that were clearly being re-used.

I know I'm not the only one who had that experience with eggs, so it's no wonder that many people assume brown eggs are more nutritious. If we're working off the assumption that all white eggs at the grocery store come from big factory farms and that all brown eggs come from local farmers who raise free-range chickens ... sure. Brown is better.

But is that true?

What determines the color of an eggshell?

Eggshell color is determined by the breed and genetics of the hen, not by the conditions in which the chicken is raised. Generally speaking, you can tell whether eggs will be white by looking at a hen's earlobes, the colored skin on the side of the head. Hens with white earlobes generally lay white eggs. Hens with brown or reddish earlobes generally lay eggs that are brown, or sometimes light green, blue or a speckled creamy color, according to Michigan State University Extension.

No one breed of hen, however, is proven to lay a more nutritious egg than another, despite the color of the eggshell. Not all eggs are created equal because not all hens are raised the same way.

The hen's conditions can affect the egg's nutrition

A test done by Mother Earth News on eggs taken from 14 flocks around the country whose hens were allowed frequent access to fresh pasture found that true free-range eggs were nutritionally superior to eggs sold in grocery stores. When they compared the nutrition in the free-range eggs to the official U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition data for commercial eggs, the eggs from those hens in the pasture contained:

• 1/3 less cholesterol
• 1/4 less saturated fat
• 2/3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta carotene

"True" free-range means just that. Eggs from the grocery store that are marketed as free range do not necessarily come from hens that have spent their days roaming the barnyard, getting fresh air and eating a natural diet. When "free-range" is on an egg carton, it means that the chickens can move around their building and have access to the outdoors "during their production cycle."

But access doesn't guarantee time outside. There's no regulation that says getting to that door has to be easy, how big the outdoor area must be, or that a chicken ever has to get outside. A chicken in a crowded henhouse may never get to the door, and if it manages to go through it, may find there's no room for it in the small area outside.

That's why it's so hard to determine if free-range eggs at the store come from truly free-range chickens. At a farm or farmers market, you can ask about the conditions that the hens are raised in before you buy.

Another factor in the nutrition of an egg is the hen's diet. Although chickens are not vegetarians by nature — bugs and worms are part of their natural diets — Consumer Reports tested grocery store eggs and found that "hens fed vegetarian diets tended to have more of certain vitamins and omega-3s than those from hens fed a conventional diet."

So when you're choosing eggs and aiming for nutrition, don't judge an egg by its shell color. White eggs can be just as nutritious as brown eggs. Hens that are raised in conditions that are natural to them — with access to the outdoors, sunlight and exercise — and fed a good diet are what you're looking for. To find them, you'll need to ask some questions and, perhaps, pay a little more, because raising hens in pastures costs more than raising them at factory farming.

'Blood moon' eclipse will be century's longest

If you happen to be in Europe, Africa, Australia or anywhere else in the Eastern Hemisphere on July 27, you just might find yourself standing under this century's longest lunar eclipse.

This spectacular event, which occurs when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, will feature a length of totality of 103 minutes. Unlike a "blue moon," which doesn't actually have anything to do with color, the "blood moon" that will glow in the night sky will, in fact, be a ruddy red color.

The reason for this phenomenon is more spectacular than you might think. The moon, within the shadow of the Earth, is reflecting the collective light of every sunset and sunrise around the globe. As NASA points out, if you were standing on the moon during a lunar eclipse, the view of Earth's dark side would be quite beautiful.

You might suppose that the Earth overhead would be completely dark. After all, you’re looking at the nightside of our planet. Instead, something amazing happens. When the sun is located directly behind Earth, the rim of the planet seems to catch fire! The darkened terrestrial disk is ringed by every sunrise and every sunset in the world, all at once. This light filters into the heart of Earth's shadow, suffusing it with a coppery glow.

The moon reflects that amber color and –– voila! –– we get red moonlight back on Earth.

So why does the length of this total lunar eclipse differ from the 85 others that have or will take place this century? July's full moon, also nicknamed the Buck Moon, will take place during the monthly lunar cycle when the moon is at its furthest point from Earth. It will be the opposite of a supermoon (when the full moon is closest to Earth) and will instead be a full mini-moon.

Because the moon is farther away from Earth, it's both smaller and moves slower through the nearly 1 million-mile wide shadow (known as the umbra) cast by the planet. It also helps that the moon will pass through the center of Earth's shadow and not to the north or south like previous total lunar eclipses.

Those outside the viewing area for July's eclipse won't have to wait long for their own chance to peer up at a full blood moon. The next total eclipse, visible over northwest Africa, Europe and the Americas, will take place on Jan. 21, 2019.
